TWO PEOPLE WAYLAID.

A VIOLENT ASSAULT. AFFAIR AT ONEHUNG-A. Something of a sensation occurred at Onehunga last evening, when -two respected residents, Mr. and Mns. Martiaengo, wbtc waylaid, and very roughly handled. Mr. Martinengo manages Hayward's Picture Theatre at Onehunga, and it was at the close of laat nigh-t't •performance, while Mr. and Mrs. Martinengo were walking home, that they were attacked in Grey Street West Mrs. Martinengo, it would appear, wai carrying the takings of the evening's perfomance in a bag, and that would perhaps account for -the fact that 6ne was most roughly handled in the asswh which was made by a powerfully bant man whom they met in the street as they Beared their home. The night was not a particularly clear one, and it was thought that as the man came along he was simply a citizen hurrying home as they themselves were. Instead of passing them, however, the man suddenly struck out, and sent Mrs Martinengo reeling to the ground. Her husband gra.ppled with their assailant, and the loud screams of the prostrate woman speedily brought assistance. People hastened from various adjoining houses and were in time to see a burly figure disappearing into the darkness. The man -had been forced -to decamp without plunder of any kind—prestvming that robbery wae th; motive of the aasault. Mrs Martinengo, however, suffered severely. She was attended by Dr. "Bruce and -besides being considerably hrufeed and knocked about, sustained a very bad nervous shock. Mr Mairtinengo got a good view of his assailant, and lias .been able to supply c. full description to the police, who are confident of being | able to locate the man.
