FOOTBALL IN AUSTRALIA.
NEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN.
RETURN LEAGUE MATCH. N.S.W. 31, N.Z. 12. (.By Cable—Press Association.—Copyrigtu.) SYDNEY, June 9. The return match between the New South Wales and New Zealand League football teams was played to-day on a sloppy ground, in cold and showery weather. There was an attendance of 20.000. The teams were as follows: — New Zealand: Fullback, W. Mitchell; three-quarters. Proebstel. Kelly, Duvall:! five-eights, Ifwerson, Beko; halfback, Jackson ; forwards, Hogan, Clark, Hayward, King, Walters, Shadbolt. New South Wales: Fullback, Hallett-, three-quarters, Frawley, Messenger. Devereaux, Brooinham; five-eighths, Deane; halfback, Halloway; forwards, Sullivan, Pearce, Courtnay, jilcCue. Burger, Canu. New South Wales had the assistance of the wind in the first spell, and had all the best of matters, the backs handling the ball with remarkable precision considering the conditions. New Zealand's line was crossed on four occasions, two of the tries being converted, the score at halftime being. New South Wales 16, New Zealand 0. The scorers -were Frawtey (2), Messenger and Broomham, Messenger converting two of the tries. Frawley's tries were the outcome of brilliant runs by the scorer. New Zealand commenced the second spell with great dash, two tries being obtained in quick succession. Shadbolt i was first awarded a try for obstruction, and then Ifwerson outpaced the opposition and scored. Ifwerson goaled on each occasion. New South Wales NveTe again penalised for obstruction, and once more Ifwerson sent the ball over the bar, making the scores: New South Wales 16, New Zealand 12. The tide then turned, the stamina and combination of the home team proving too much for the visitors, who found the pace too hot. Halloway, Deane, and Frawley scored tries, two being converted ,by Messenger, who also kicked a penalty goal, the final scores being:— New South Wales 31 Mew Zealand 12 The team which played yesterday doefl not on paper appear to be as strong as that which ran the New South Wales team to within two points in Saturday's stirring match. In the forwards, Mitchell and Auld were replaced by Hogan and Clark, while from the backs Manning, Bradley and Asher were missing. Their places were taken by Jackson, Duvall and Proebstel. In these circumstances the result is not so diseourag- ,- ing to supporters on this side of the Tasnian, and better achievements may be looked for when the first choice of the touring party are called upon to make their biggest efforts. With the two first matches following so closely, it wae inevitable that some of the reserves should be called upon for the second effort. |
