TWO UNEXPECTED CANDIDATES.

Nominations closed at-noon to-day for the -Auckland Harbour Board, and two unexpected candidates entered the' field, namely Mr. J. B. Leyland and Mr. J. D. Chalmers, of Gleubrook, Waiuku. \ The extended franchise, under which the Harbour Board is now elected, still has some peculiar features. For instance, iri the matter of payers of dues on shipping, 97 persons are' /entitled to vote for two members, while a large suburban borough like Mount Eden, with a population of 10,000, only returns one member. Of ihe 97 payers of dues on shipping, only 60 are expected to be able to vote, and they return two members. ■; Mr. I>eter Virtue was returned unopposed as representative of the payers of dues other than shipping. For the payers of dues on shipping there are now four candidates, Mr. Willinm Black Leyland having been nominated .by 'Messrs. J. J. Craig , , G. Winstone, Geo. McKenzie, J. H. Adams, and G. J. Mackay. .. A few minutes 'before 12 o'clock a eecond candidate was nominated for Manukau, namely, Mr. J. D. Chalmers, of Glenbrook, Wainku, who will •contest that seat with. Mr. H.
