i Mr. J. B. Godson, second art master lat the Auckland Technical College, has I bean appointed first art master. Mr. J. A. Bond, the well-known New Zealand artist, arrived in Auckland by the MaJwa this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Withy, who are stationed as missionaries at Colombo, returned on furlough to Auckland by the Malwa this morning. Mrs. Colin Ustin. of Sydney, who has been staying at the Star Hotel, leaves !by the P. and O. steamer Malwa tonight. Mr. Geoffrey Fairfax, one of the proprietors of the "Sydney Morning Herald,'" was, with Mrs. Fairfax, a passenger to Auckland by the Malwa this morning. Mr. C. Y. Fell, a well-known solicitor, of Nelson, returned by the Malwa this morning in company with Mrs. and Miss Fell after a trip to England. Mr. and Mrs. Trevor Gould, now of Sydney, and formerly of Auckland, | arrived by the Malwa this morning on a holiday visit. Piako County Council have appointed Mr. D. W. McArthur, of Auckland (Late of Waihi), as Engineer,, at a salary of £400 a year. His duties commence on January 2nd. Major Wykeham Jones and party, English visitors, who, through the frequency of their visits, now know New Zealand well, arrived by the Malwa this morning, and will go on to Rotorua for the fishing season. Captain Collins, D.5.0., of the Imperial General Staff, was a passenger to New Zealand by the Malwa this morning. Captain Collins, who is on loan to the New Zealand Government, will proceed direct to Wellington. Archdeacon Uthwatt, of the Melanesian Mission, returned from Australia by the Malwa this morning after i three months' health-recruiting holiday. The Archdeacon is feeling quite well again, and after a further stay in Auckland will return to ths mission fields. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher (Minister of Marine and Customs) arrived from Wellington this morning, accompanied by Mr. Hall (private secretary). Mr. Fisher accompanied the Prime Mfciister to welcome Lord and Lady Liverpool on arrival of the Ma'wa, and later attended the civic luncheon to the j Governor-designate. It is Mr. Fish«J*s intention to remain in Auckland for | some time, and to take part in somo j of the tennis matches with the visiting, English players next week. The Rev. Dr. J. G. Hughes, an old Auckland boy, returned to hit, home by the Vancouver mail steamer yesterday. after fourteen years' absence, during which he has studied in London, Scotland, and the United States. He published a theological work while in America, for which the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him by the Baptist Theological College at Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Hughte being the youngest student who ever received that honour. He will spend some little time in New Zealand, completing a book upon the introduction of (.nrUtiatiity to the Maori race.
