THE COMMITTEE'S ULTIMATUM.
(By TelegTaph—.Own. Correspondent.) ; ; CH3_ST(__j_CH, this day. The decision of the tramway men to present an ultimatum to the Tramway Board has aroused a great deal of surprise loealiy. It has been known that there was discontent in the service, but tbe extent of it had not been realised. The trouble has been largely from the Board's method of treating its "jpares." The men who iorm this group often have to be in attendance for fifteen, or sixteen hours a day. in order to secure six and a half hours' work, which is paid for at the rate of lid. per hour. In Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin, the " spares " are given a minimum of eight hours. The local demand is for a similar minimum, the time to be given within a twelve-hour day or overtime pai4 for time outside the tweive hours. If the Board does not grant this demand and other claims by making alterations in its roster within seven days, the men will hold a mass meeting at two o'clock on the afternoon of Monday, June 24th. ail traffic being suspended for that purpose.
