A RACE IN TEE AIR. SYDNEY. May 12. Articles have been signed for the first aviation contest between Hart, of Australia, and Stone, of America, from Sydney to Parramatta and hack. NAVY PROMOTION. (Received 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this clay. The Federal Government has decided to inaugurate in the Australian navy a scheme of promotion from the lower deck, provided the British Admiralty concurs. It is considered that this will have an important effect in inducing boys to join the navy. ELECTRIFYING THE RAILWAYS. I Received 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. The State Government i s calling for tenders for the conversion of the suburban railways to electric traction. The cost will be approximately two millions.
