A large assortment of Saturday arrestees ranged from the y-outh who 'had spent his last penny in making merry, and another who had 'been reduced to •the comparative penury of three ha - pence, to ;the man whose gay .time was cut sh-ort while he was still affluent, in the possession of a couple ! of sovereigns. One first offender was convicted and discharged, six others were lined 5/ apiece, and two who did not appear were ordered to have their bail of 20/ each forfeited Herbert Skeen and James Rao paid 10/ each as the penalty of a second offence, and Albert Anderson, in consideration of his 'having, been two nights in custody, was let oil' with 5/. As 'the price of having broken his prohibition order, Richard Williams had to pay £2. Edward Bragley, a young man who was arrested while making himself a nuisance outside a skating rink in Coburg-strcet, and who resisted arrest, was fined £l. Daniel South, arrested and charged with using obscene language while drunk in Victoria-street on Saturday night, denied both charges, and the case was adjourned till Wednesday to enable him to call witnesses. Henry Whiteside, for •behaving in a disorderly manner in Queen-street while drunk, was convicted and discharged, and ordered to be prohibited. AIXEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER The charge against lAnnie McConnell of having attempted, on 19th August, to murder Thomas Madigan by shooting him with a revolver, was further rem.ynded for a week, on the application of Mr. Matthews, for Mr. J. R. Lundon, solicitor for the defence, who was engaged at the Supreme Court and was unable to proceed with the case. The police were prepared to go on with the case, Thomas Madigan having been discharged from the hospital as convalescent. It .was understood that the case should definitely proceed on Monday. INCITING TO RESIST. On Saturday night a disturbance among a number of young men outside a skating rink in Coburg-street resulted in the manager of the rink ringing up for the police. A constable went to the .scene and arrested a man for drunkenness, when a young man named Herbert Gwylliam came close to them and shouted, "Don't go. Take to the John." The arrested man T roko away, and Gwylliam | was arrested. He pleaded ignorance of the law or. the matter as an excuse, but the Magistrate stated that the offence was one which he considered very serious. As nothing had been previously known against accused, he would bo let off with a fine of "<£2, in default seven days in gaol. MISCELLANEOUS. John Laidlaw was fined 10/ and 7/ costs for driving a motor car at more than a walking pace round the corner of the Ponsonby Club Hotel. P. Bryant, the holder of a heavy traffic license from the Remuera Road Board, for neglecting to have the ntimber of the license painted on his dray, was fined -5/ and 30/ costs.
