This team will play l u University Club's jerseys. J Ideal conditions prevailed last Saturday, and a large number of spectators journeyed to Reruuenv in anticipation of a good afternoon's aport, but the two big matches were raiher disappointing and had it not been for the struggle between Technical Collage and Mount Eden in the cup tie final for the second grade championship, under the auspices of the Ladies' Hockey Association, and a couple of junior matches, it would have been a quiet afternoon.

The contest between Technical College and Mount Eden was most exciting, and produced a very keen fight. The first spell was slightly in favour of Mount Eden, and they led at half-time by one goal to nil. However, a different tale was told in the concluding spell, and Technical Oollege.-through persistent attacking, managed to come out victors bv two goals to one. The students' second goal caused a great deal of comment, but they thoroughly deserved to win. Although the fixture between the Saturday and Wednesday was played under most favouraule weather circumstances, and the ground in fairly good order, it was rather an uninteresting game to watch. The Wednesdayites would have been more evenly matched against the junior reps., but they had another object in view than success, and that was a chance to learn something from their more experienced brethren. Notwithstanding that the exposition of hockey was not of a very high order, the mid-weekers found the game of much benefit. As one of their players put it to me, "We learnt something, anyhow." Combination to any great extent was conspicuous by its absence, the play being rather ragged, and erratic hitting spoiling many chances of covnbined play. At times, in the second spell, matters improved somewhat, but never reached a very high standard. The Saturday eleven only contained the players available for the trip to Taranaki in three weeks' time, so consequently a number of the star performers who journeyed to Wellington in quest of the shield were omitted on account of their inability to visit the butter country.

The outstanding feature of Saturday's play was the fine performance of their halfback line. The trio played splendidly and seldom gave the opposing forwards much liberty. Robinson showed out most prominently, whether on the defence or attack. Ptowe'g play was more of the solid order, but hardly fed his wings enough. Dickerson hardly made a mistake, and was always in position. Jackson (Saturday) and Horspool (Wednesday) are wonderful speculators, and seldom missed anything that came along. Morton was seen to most advantage in the second half. Of the forwards King and Whittaker were the pick. The latter passes with good judgment.

On the Wednesday aide. Durham plays | a good fullback game, and possesses more resource than his partner. Rice and Stewart did most of the work in the halfline. The Wednesday forwards were only fairly good. Smyth was inclined to Be selfish, and spoilt chances on that account. Haresnape and Barton were about the best of them. The latter holds his stick in quite an unorthodox manner. The annual match between Ponsonby and Rodney was played at Remuera last Saturday, and resulted in a victory for the home team by three goals to nil. In the first half Ponsonby had all the best of matters and notched the three goals. The second spell saw the countryitos to better advantage, and setting up a game defence managed to keep their more seasoned rivals from further scoring. Owing to the abandonment of the. Norden Clip fixture between Thames and Wanganui, Thames are sending the strongest eleven that has ever left the Quartzopolis to try conclusions with the Auckland eleven. Thames have been showing exceedingly good form in the practice mutches, and are confident of putting up a good fight with the Auckland shield-hunters. The Mount Eden Club's annual "at home" will be held in the Society of Arts Hall next Friday night. Special arrangements have been made for a special car to leave after the dance for Dominionroad, and a 'bus for Ponsonby. Mr. J". Lepine and Mr. E. Xoonan left bv the Main Trunk express last evening for Wellington to be present at the concluding games of the ladies' championships. The executive committee of the Auckland Hockey Association met in the Sports Qubrooat last evening (Tuesday), There were present: Messrs. H. D. Hill (chairman), BL D. Caro, A. M. Row*, H. C. Culpan, T. D. Wrigley, H. H." Parton, F. B. Taylor, L. H. Norton (secretary), and E. Haj- (Referees' Association). The disqualification imposed on a player of the Permanent Force Club by the Auckland Wednesday Hockey Association was confirmed. It was decided to play the President's Cup final, between College Rifles and Areta, on September 23rd, while the same date was fixed for a challenge match between the Referees" Association and the A.H.A executive Mr. H. D. Hill was elected sole selector for representative teams. The ThamesAuckland representative fixture was confirmed for Saturday next s at Remucra. LADIES' TOURNAMENT. AUCKLAND AGAIN BEATEN. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The New Zealand ladies' hookey tournament was continued to-day. The only game in which any fine hockey was displayed was in the Hawke's Bay-Mana-watu B fixture. The defeat of Auckland by Buller was a surprise, as also was Wellington's win over West Coast, but the lastnamed team has entered a protest against the referee for not allowing a goal which, in his opinion, was shot between the posts from outside the circle. Hawke's Bay defeated Manawatu B by 6 goals to \. This was an excellent contest, and credit is due to the Manawatu team, which was composed of mere girls, for their display against the champions. Mr. B. Keay refereed. AVellington B beat West Coast by 2 goals to 1. There was not much to pick between the teams. Mr. C. Searell refereed. Buller bea-t Auckland by C goals to 2, aft.=r a poor game. The winners, on their play, certainly did not merit such a hollow victory. Buller'B play was unscientific, and Auckland lost many opportunities through the forwards hitting too lightly in th.- circle. In the close of the second spell Auckland should have been awarded two penalty bullies, for players keeping the ball hidden under their skirts. Til scorers for the winners were Misses" M. Maekay (2), D. Greenland (2), A. Hale, and E. Vitaglich, and for Auckland Misses Kenny and Wylie. Mr. R. Tinney refereed.

After a keen but uninteresting struggle Manawatu A heat Wanganui by 2 goals to nil. Mr. F. Ryan refereed. Canterbury A beat Marlborough by 3 goals to nil. The play in this game was decidedly poor, and no combination was shown on either side. « Nelson 11 defeated Canterbury B by 3 i;oals to nil, after a fairly fast and even game. Southland beat 'Wairarapa by 3 goals to 1.
