John Balance, was seized with a tit while travelling in a tram car yesterday afternoon, and died -a few minutes later. CHRISTCHURCH ROAD WORKS. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. , The City Council last night decided by a bare majority to send the Mayor's road scheme to the ratepayers..for approval. The scheme involves a'loaiibf £.60,000, and covers the reconstruction of forty miles of streets. THE IRISH DELEGATES." PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday. The committee set up in connection with the recent visit of the Irish delegates held a final meeting to-night. The total amount raised for the Home Rule fund in Palmerston North was £155, less £15 expenses. Levin and Foxton were worked from Palmerston, and realised £55, Shannon about £25, and Feilding ! £84. Thu3 the district contributes over £300. MISCELLANEOUS. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The body of, Frederick East, a fisherman, who has been missing from Kaiapoi, was found on the beach at New Brighton this morning. ' TIMARU, this day. Some wheat in store from coast farms has been found to contain earcockle (or purples), a mischievous disease, due to an eel worm apparently not observed •here before. NELSON, this day. At the Supreme Court a man named Edwin Arnold, indicted with having committed a criminal assault upon an imbecile woman, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, and declared an habitual criminal. BLENHEIM, thisday. A motor launch belonging to Mr. G Pilmer and -Mr. ¥. Nicholis was totally destroyed by fire in Opawa river on Saturday, through a leak in tho benzine tarik. The launch was valued at £500, but was not insured.
