FIRST .DAY. (By Association.) LiBVIX, "Wednesday. On the nerv course at Otaki to-day the Otaki Maori Racing Club began its spring meeting. The totalisator receipts amounted to £6167. A large party of Parliamentarians were amongst the visitors, and the attendance as a whole was astonishingly i large. Spring Meeting was continued at Caulfield to-day. The race track was heavy, as the result of recent rains. In the decision of the Eclipse Stakes the Auckland horse Master Soult showed himself up attractively, winning his race at the right end. The following are the details of the racing:— THE EMO HURDLE RA.CE of 200sovs. Two miles 64 yards. THE MONA NURSERY HANDICAP Of 650 soys. Half a mile. Twa Brigs, 8.1 * Sweet Malt, 7.3 \ Philio, 8.0 6 Sixteen others ran. After settling down. Twa Brigs went to the front ana led all the way. and won comfortably by three-quarters, of a length. Time oljs. THE ECLIPSE STAKES of 600sovs. For three-year-olds and upwards. Weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances. One mile and three furlongs. Mesdames Foss and Steuartfs b li Master Soult, Oyrs, by Soult — Lady .Hester 1 Olivaster, Gyre, by Palmer — Olive .- 2 Dunaus, 3yrs, by Bobadil — Danaide .. 3 Danaus and Olivaster led to the mile post, from Master Soult, Mindful, and Posjture. Master Soult ran into third place ; i along the back, where Conge d'Eslire drew lup to the leader, Master Soult being next, '■ and Dauaus fell away last. Ma.ster Soult chased Olivaster into the straight, where ■ Conge d'Eslire dropped back, Dauaus tneanfuile regaining his lost ground rapidly. Olivaster led to the distance, when. Master Soult went up with his challenge, aud the pair fighting out an exciting finish the New Zealand horse got the best of his opponent and won by half a length. Olivaster was three-quarters of a length in advance of Danaus, with Conge d Eslire fourth and Mindful last. Time 2.24 J.

THE AUSTRALIAN CORINTHIAN of 175sovs. One mile. J. H. Crosbie's b g Battery, aged, by Bundook — Ruin. 10.0 1 Optimism. 11.13 2 Aleldo, 10.10 <* Eight others ran. Port Logan made the runuing to the railway side, where Battery took charge aud won by a length. Time 1.47 J. THE COONGY HANDICAP of 200sovs. One mile aud three furlongs. E. E. D. Clarke's b li Eyeglass, 4yrs, by Isinglass — River Trent, 7.3 1 Flavian, 6.9 2 Artillerie, 5.9 3 Also s.tarted: Aborigine, Post Town, Fasouree, Ketlie, Hoax, Topedi, Balgowan, Zangloh, Prizelighter, Loch Shiel, Imprint, Perilous. Hoax and Eyeglass alternately headed the Held. In an exciting finish, Eyeglass won by a head from Flavian, with_Artillerle half a neck away, third. Time 2.235. THE MOOXGA HANDICAP of 20060V5.
