PRICE OF TOBACCO.
BRINGING CHINESE INTO LINE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. J. B. Speed (president of the Wellington and New Zealand Tobacconists' Associa-1 tions), R. W. Armit (Wellington Associa-. tion executive), and H. i H '. Allen (secre- ; tary to both bodies), waited on the j Chinese Consul, Mr. Hwang, this morn- ; ing, and laid before him a copy of the proposed tariff of the association with, a view to arriving at an amicable under-> standing in regard .to the control of the tobacco trade. The Consul listened to the deputation's views and discussed j the matter with the members. Mr. I Hwang intimated that as far as lay in ] his power he would assist the associa- [ tion. The Chinese traders had already; held a meeting and discussed the matter,, and they were quite in accord with the j association. He would call another meet- ; ing of the traders and lay the copy of the proposed tariff before them. Mr. Hwang explained that in some districts in China there existed similar conditions to those proposed by the deputation. Councils were elected by the tradespeople and j these regulated the prices, so that it j was impossible for one trader to undersell another.
