ELLERSLIE TOWN BOARD.

IMPORTANT! DRAINAGE' SCHEMES. A meeting of Ellerslie ratepayers was held in the l'arish Hull, •EUerslie, last evening, for the purpose of receiving the report and balance-sheet of the last year's work of the Town Board. The chairman of tie Town Board (Mr. G. Wilkinson) presided, and, hi addition to the members of the Hoard, about 50 ratepayers were in attendauce. I

The balauce-tihcet for the year ending March 31st, 11)10, showed that expenditure, including several items for the year I'JOS to 19LW, amounted to £1433 li/T. This included a debit balance at the beginning of the year, £433 0/2; office expenses, £177 1/4; Auckland Uospital and Cnaritable Aid Board, £7t! 0/4; street lighting, £45 IU/S; street wages, £212 15/1; materials, £243 3/7. The receipts showed the general rates collected from I'JOH amounted to £620 10/5; Government subsidy, £07 14/0; transfer from water account, £200: to balance, £341 10/10. The liabilities of the Board were put down at £434 15/4, and fhe assets at £555 8/5. The statement of balances for 100S and 1901) showed a debit of £131 il/4, and liabilities over assets were £44 4/6, a total of £175 15/10. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, drew special attention to the water and sanitary services that had been introduced to the district. In concluding, ho said lie thought that their .town was now in a very satisfactory state, and during the last two years they had .had only two cases of infectious diseases in the district. The report In tlie Urst place dealt with the drainage connecting with the Ouehungai main sewur, aud the cost of the scheme, with provision for contingencies and supervision, Mt. Metcalfe estimated at £10,000. As to the suggestion to dispense with tUe outfall sewer and run the drainage into a cave, Mr. Metcalfe, while considering that such an arrangement might work, said it was Impossible to say for how !ong, If this scheme was adopted, he considered the total cost would be Jin .000. The reticulation in both schemes would be the same, £TSOO. 'In the first scheme tue outfall to Onehunga would amount to £GOSO, bringing the total to £13,820. Contingencies and supervision, at 15 per cent, would he £2000, bringing tbe total to £10,000. In the alternative scheme £1000 would be necessary for a settling tank and £000 for probable length of sewer to it, and with provisions for contingencies and supervision, the cost would be £11,000.

There was a third scheme, said the chairman, the combining with One-tree Hill and Onehvmgn. He did not wish to say much on the schemes, but after a conference had been held with the One-tree Hill Board, he would ask them to meet again and come to some definite decision. Iα answer to a question, he said the extra rate would be J£d in the f, but as a counter-balance to this, the sanitary rate would bo taken off. A hetiTty vote of thanks to the chairman and members of the Board, moved by Mr. 11. Gerard and seconded by JMr. E. I'ountnoy was carried unanimously, and a vote of thanks to the clerk (Mr. A. Eoss) was carried with acclamation.
