I SAN FRANCISCO, June 16. ; Governor Gillette, who has issued in- : structions to prevent the match between - Johnson and Jeffries t>eing fought in California, states that prize fights are criminal, but sparring exhibitions are lawful, even if they come to a conclusion. He describes a prize fight as a pugilistic contest when the expectation of reward is coupled with the infliction of some degree of bodily harm. Tex Rickard, one of the promoters of 1 the fight, has replied that if Governor Gillette opposes the meeting of . Johnson and Jeffries in California Jie will take the fight to Salt Lake City or Nevada City. The principals have agreed to sell the rights of the moving pictures: of the fight for £30,000, the fighters taking £±0,000 apiece, and. Messrs. Riekard and Gleason £10,000. Rickard asserts that the buyers have not stipulated for the * length of the match, and the £30,000 will be' paid if it lasts only for a single round.
