During the flood period horrible sceies were witnessed in the Ahr Valley, Italian and Croatian railway labourers refused to listen to the warnings of the canteenkeepers, and when the latter fled, on ttie approach of the torrent, tne labourers seized the wine and spirits, land 70, who became intoxicated., were drowned. It is estimated that at least 300 were drowned, in the Ahr Valley. . "Many of the thoroughfares in the , south-west of Berlin were flooded from : 3ft io 6ft deep. Floods occurred in the Hassankaleh . and Erzerum provinces of Turkey. , A wall of water swept away half of a town, hundreds being drowned.
