WHO OWNS THE LAKES?

ARAWA TRIBE v. THE CROWN.

The cases in which the Arawa Tribe, or two member of it, seek to establish their titles to ownership to Lakes Rotonia and Eotoiti, was set down for hearing at the Supreme Court yesterday. Plaintiffs in each case allege that the land at the bottom of the lake belongs to them, that the lakes belong to them, and that they have the so.'c right to grant fishing, ferry and tall rights o-ver the lakes. With the growth of the tourist traffic at Rotonia, these rights have become very valuable mdoed, and the claim of the Natives as against the Crown is a very heavy one. Mr. P. Earl appeared for the plaintiffs, and the Hon. J. A. Tole for the Crown. When the case was mentioned yesterday, Mr. Earl said that it had been agreed between Mr. Tole and himself that the case was one that ought to go to the Full Court. His Honor offered no objection, and it was arranged that a cast! be stated for the higher court. The writs for this case were issued on December 20fch, before the passage of the Native Land Act, under which such proceedings could not be taken.
