PERSONAL.
Mr. .T. IL Pollock, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. J. Biddle, of Gisbome, are on a visit to Auckland, staying at the Central Hotel.
Mr. S. T. Solomon, of Levuka, Fiji, is on a short visit to Auckland, having arrived by Uie Atua on Wednesday. He is stopping at the Central Hotel. The " Age " understands that Mr. B. H. Turton, stipendiary magistrate at Wairarapa, has resigned from the magistracy, with the object of entering into privace practice. The Hon. James Carroll (Minister for Native Affairs) arrived by the Main Trunk train this morning, and is staying at the Star Hotel. He was accompanied by Mr. Blake, of Hawke'a Bay. Lieutenant Pullen, of No. 1 Company, G.A.V., has been elected captain of Ho. 3 Company, and the election to fill the vacancy in No. 1 Company will take place to-night. The choice will probably fall on >Sergeant-major C. D. Hill. Mr. and Mrs. J. Kennedy, of Sydney, who have been touring New Zealand, arrived by the Main Trunk train from the South this morning, and. are stopping at the Central Hotel till Monday, when they return to Australia by the Maheno.
Sister Linda, the newly-appointed deaconess for St. David' 3 Church, arrived yesterday afternoon from Dunedin by the Tarawera. She is a daughter of the late Rev. Lindsay Maekie, minister of First Church, Dunedin, and a grand-daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Andrew Cameron, of Edinburgh and Melbourne.
The Hon. A. T. 2sga,ta, representative of the native race on the Executive, returned to Wellington on Wednesday from Port Avvanui. Towards the end of March he will visit the Urewera country in connection with the proposed purchase by the Government' of a large area of native land, and the bringing into operation of the Urewera Native Reserve Act. Count Bismarck of Carlsbiirg, Germany, was amongst the passengers by the UUmaroa, which arrived at the Bluff from Me!bourne this week. Count Bismarck Is a relative of the famous Chancellor, and is about to undertake an extensive tour of the Doirrinion, inehidmg Queenstown, Paradise, Dunedin, Christ-church, the Otira and Buller Gorges, Wellington, the ganui Eiver, Rotorua and Auckland.
