MANNING OF VESSELS.
UNION CAPTAINS FINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. In the Police Court to-day, Mr. Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment in the cases in which Captains Newton and Mac Donald were charged with undermanning in connection with the steamer Mcana. In recording conviction and fining Captain Newton £10 and costs and Captain Mac Donald £5 and costs, the Magistrate said the circumstances relied on by the defence, namely, that the ship carried a boatswain who was an A.8., might be taken into consideration in mitigation, of the penalty. He did not look upon it as a very serious offence, seeing that the boatswain was the pick of the crew. The object of the prosecution was attained by calling attention to the stringent provisions of the Act. It wa3 absolutely necessary that the master of the ship should see that a full complement was carried. Any dereliction of such duty would be seriously met in the Courts.
