GLADIATOR AFLOAT.

I SUCCESS OF SALVAGE OPERAI TIONS. | LONDON, October 2. The operations for the salving of H.M. < cruiser Gladiator have been attended with success. The Gladiator came into collision with the American liner St. Paul during a snowstorm, off the Isle of Wight, and was sunk. The operations for salvage were entrusted to the Liverpool Salvage Association, under Captain Young. They have now progressed so far that the vessel is once more afloat, but the pumps are still inadequate to cope with the water amidships. Attempts have been made to refloat the Gladiator ever since she was beached, .the method adopted being to sink huge cylinders on either side of her and then pump them out, thus securing buoyancy. She was then righted by means of huge steam capstans, and gradually brought ashore on the successive tides, so that the holes in her hull might be more readily repaired."
