KAURI GUM MARKET. Auckland Star Office, July loth, 1903. The position of the kauri gum market is still unsatisfactory. It is now quite evident that the supply of kauri gum is limited when the price does not suit the diggers, from which it may be presumed that the men (when the figure offered is too low) can find more remunerative employment. The supplies of gum sent in for the month of July to date is 226 tons, as compared with 343 tons for a similar period last year. This brings the total shortage for the year to date, as compared with the supplies sent in last year, to 1021 tons. Tlae production of gum for the last six months is the smallest for a similar period for the last 11 years, namely, in 1807. .It is somewhat interesting to note that although there are meetings of the unemployed in town, there is no sign of the supply of gum increasing. In bygone years one of the first results of lack of employment in the town was to cause the men to take to the gumfields, but apparently thnt state of affairs is at an end. The export of gum continues fairly good. The Wakanui takes away about 200 tons of gum for London ana rsew York. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. (By Cable.—rress Association.—Copyright.)
