AUCKLAND PRESBYTERY. * The Auckland Presbytery met last evening, the Rev. Ivo E. Bertram (moderator') occupying the chair. ei-u», Nomination of Hoderator.— The Rev. W. Gray Dison was nominated to fill the moderator's chair for the ensuing year, and was duly appointed. Presbyterian Children in Boarding Schools.—The report of the committee anent the proportion of Presbyterian children in boarding schools in and around Auckland was read by the Rev. Munro, and showed that out of schools having a total of 131 scholars, seventeen of them were Presbyterians, a proportion of about 12 per cent Waikato West Charge.—Upon the call of the congregation of Waikato West, the Rev. W. Woolass. late of Pahiatua, was appointed to the charge. The induction was set down for Angust 7th, and the Revs. Blair, <»ow, and Wedderspoon were appointed as the inducting ministers. THE PROTECTION SOCIETY. ■ The Society for the Protection of -Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its monthly jneetin" in Palmerston Buildings on Monday afternoon. There were present: The president (Mr Wilding, in the chair), aud eight members or the general committee After accounts had been passed for payment, and the reports of the inspectors and secretary read, the delegates to the recent conference in Wellington gave their report. They were of opinion that the outcome of this conference would be decidedly beneficial to local societies. It had been decided to hold an annual conference or an advisory board, each society to send two delegates. Improved legislation with regard to the better prevention of cruelty to animals, and a more Stringent oversight of those who treat dumb animals mercilessly, would be demanded. It was very gratifying to know that Auckland was very irmeh ahead of the other three centres in its methods of working and general management. DEVONPOKT BOROUGH COUNCIL. TlTe ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr >Vm. Handley) occupied the chair, and there were also present: Messrs D. W. McLean, W. U. Timewell, G. Gribbin, T. Cranch, G. McKeuzie, H. Wilding, R. H. Froude, P. W. McCallum, and E. J. Osborne. On the recommendation of the Streets and Works Committee it was decided to fence the lawn tennis ground, provided the club pay the cost. It was also decided to carry out the work of piling and formation of a footpath in Burgess-road, subject to Mr Biss.the occupier of the grouud in that road, paying half cost. V.SI.C.A. CAMERA CLUB. Another of the monthly "practical talks" was given last evening by Mr. Pegler to members of the V.M.C.A. Camera Club. In anticipation of the coming visit of the American Fleet and the illuminations, etc., connected therewith, some specially useful hints were given as to the methods of obtaining pictures of firework displays, illumiuations, etc. Some useful demonstration was given with several formulas of developers, showing effects upon plates of various subjects and exposures. FRENCH CLUB. There was a large attendance at the French Club last night, M. Boeufve presiding. The president, before presenting the prizes to the pupils of secondary schools who were successful in the recent c!ub examinations in oral French, referred to the gratifying increase in the number of competitors. In 1006 there were 80 candidates, in 1907 there were 117, and at the last examination the number rose to 140. The Examining Committee, consisting of Misses Bouillon and Shand, Messrs. J. Drummond, T. Balham. and M. Boeufve. awarded the prizes as follows:—Girls: Grammar School — S. Robertson, T. Tompkins. B. Bell. E. Burton. Mount Eden College—D. Nicol, Mary Colegrove, S. Mahoney, M. McFarIflnd. Boys: Grammar School—C. MiarsacU. H. G. .Tohn-, ston, G. H. Grant. R. H. Macdonald, H,' Meikle. King's College—W. Langguth, H. Menel. T. Dormer. Sacred Heart College— J. Scott. Technical School —A. P. Young. St. John's Collegiate School—H. R. null. Master C. Marsack, in a short speech, thankod the elnb on behalf of the various schools. The evening's entertainment consisted of •nn amusing comedy. "L'Anglais tel qu'on le parlc." acted by Miksps P. Boult and Gwen. Nathan. Messrs. Balham. Wallace. Drummond, A. Boeutve. and Lelievre. followed by n number or grain.-.phone selections. During the eveninc the silver medals and diplomas of thp Alliance Francaise, Paris, were presented to Miss P. Boult, Messrs. J. Drummond and B. Wallace.
