STOCK SALES.

MU ALLEGED CRUELTY;';',jggH

The question of an improved stock train service was brought up at this afternoon's meeting of the Auckland A. and P. Association. A letter was received from the Waikato Farmers' Club, which was to the effect that a night train would be but little improvement on the present system. The suggestion was also made that the Department should be asked to "run a special train down on a recognised sale day. Mr. Massey, in referring to the difficulty of getting fat cattle down for the auction sales, said he thought the auctioneers should be asked to devote one day to the sale of fat cattle, instead of extending the sales, as at present, over two days. Mr. Thompson doubted the possibility of getting through the Auckland sales in a day.

Mr. Rutherford said that in one day, at Hornsby, Sydney, he had seen 42,000 sheep and 600 head of cattle put through, He thought that the sales could be managed on one day.

Mr. Robert Hall said he thought it •was a wonder the police did not take the matter up. It was cruel to keep cattle waiting about the yards for two or three days, as was often done.

Mr. Thompson thought it better to have a two days' sale, as at present. On the motion of Mr. Phillipps, it was agreed to refer the matter back to the Waikato Farmers' Club, with an intimation that if they formulated a scheme it would receive the support of the Auckland Association.
