The students of the Auckland Training College paid a visit of observation to the Blind Institution, at Parnell, on Wednesday last. Under Mr. Frayling's guidance" the various occupations of the inmates were watched with interest. The library was first visited, and the two kinds of type—the "Braille" and the "Moon"—were noted. Then the schoolroom proved most interesting, particularly the method of "Braille" shorthand and type writing, and the teaching of geography by raised maps. The industrial section, in which all kinds of basket weaving, coir-mat making, and. the making of horse halters, is carried on, -was also inspected. In the last room visited.- pianoforte tuning and mending are taught, and after seeing this work, a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Frayling and the staff was given by the students. The boot shop of Mr. Geo. Higgins was the object of a burglarious attack last night, the thief resorting to the simple expedient of breaking in a pane of the window and annexing several pairs of footwear from the assortment there displayed. The crashing of glass drew the attention of a passer-by, who instituted pursuit of the maurauder, but although the boots were dropped in the progress of flight, the heels of the quarry stood him in sufficient stead for temporary escape. The police were quickly notified, however, and the disturbed thief will probably appear at the Police Court pretty soon.
