MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE.
FROM STAR OF ENGLAND. ( ' A STEWARD WHO WAS DISCHARGED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' WANGANUI, this day. ■ A bottle was picked up on the beach at the mouth of the Wanganui River, con- ' taining piece of ship's shelving paper, containing a message which, as far as can be "deciphered (the paper having become stained by sea-water)", reads as follows:— "Deer. 23, 1904. " Star of England boat sinking: taking to the rafts. Send help off Island' <* Terra del Fuego.—James P . ~ Steward S. of E." The final name is indistinct, but it appears like Paterson. It has been ascertained that the Star of England, which is at present in England, was between Sydney and Melbourne on December 23, 1904, and on the vessel's arrival at Sydney a steward was discharged owing to giving way to drink. From the appearance of the bottle it is evident that it had had a long immersion in the water.
