FAREWELL DINNER TO MR. C.F. EDGAR.
A large company assembled last night at "The Tiffin" on the invitation of Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen, Ltd., to a complimentary dinn_r given to Mr. C. F. Edgar on the occasion of his departure, to fill an important position in their Christchurch branch. Mr. A. D. Stewart, in the absence of Mr. T. Fhilayson, presided, and was supported by Messrs. C. A. Jones, F. and C. F_nlayson, Buchanan and Christie. After an excellent repast the usual toast of "The King" was honoured with enthusiasm. Mr. C. H. Jones then proposed "Our Guest," touching upon the excellent work Mr. Edgar had done in the past, the innumerable friends he had made in Auckland by his general courtesy and basin ess-like methods, finally asking the company to join him in wishing Mr. Edgar all _£__> success he could wish himself in his new undertaking. The toast was drunk amid general enthusiasm, with musical honours, extra cheers being given for Mrs. Edgar. In returning thanks, in_,an able speech, Mr. Kdgar expressed Lis gratitude for the manner in which the toast had been received, and mentioned the misgivings he j had on arriving at Auckland from DunI'din. to take up his late position, with i but few friends, and how loyally the: whole staff had welcomed and supported him through the troubles and trials that are inevitably connected with such a | position. Mr. Buchanan gave the toast of Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen, Ltd., which was appropriately responded to by Mr. Stewart. The health of the warehouse manager. Mr. C. H. Jones, was then submitted by Mr. Stewart, Mr. Jones responding in his usual vigorous manner. The last toast of the evening being I that of the chairman, was ably proposeby Mr. Buchanan, and mis responded to by Mr. Stewart in his happiest vein, j Among those who contributed to a very: interesting musical programme were ! Messrs. Armisrcr, Edgar, Patterson. Tny- • lor. and recitations by Mr. H. Herbert. Proceedings terminated about 10.30 with "Auld L-in? Syne."
