■ * THIS DAY. (Before Messrs. Nathan and Peacocke, J.P.'s.) THE DRUNKARDS Margaret Williams, who made her fourth appearance during the last six months, was sent into retirement for twelve weeks. Two men and a woman, who came within the definition of "first offenders," were each awarded 10/- and costs, with the alternative of 48 hours. REMANDED. A Portuguese sailor, answering to the name of Antonio Rosa, was remanded for a week on a charge of desertion from the ship Geni. MISSING BOOTS. An elderly man named Wm. A. Markey admitted that he had appropriated four pair of boots belonging to his employer, afterwards disposing of them per medium of a second-hand dealer. The Bench sent him to Mount Eden for a month on each charge, the terms to run concurrently. CHARGE AGAINST A TRAMWAY EMPLOYEE. On the application of Detective McMahon, a "remand for eight days was granted in the case of Victor Ehrman, a young employee of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, who was charged with having stolen a quantity of tram tickets, valued at £20 0/3. Mr. Glaister, appearing for the accused, made an application for bail, which was refused. TWO MONTHS. Joseph Buchanan came down from the country, and with a friend went to stay at Mr. J. C. Griffin's hotel in Parnell, representing himself as a capitalist to the extent of £30, which he had left with a publican in Dargaville. On the strength of this be borrowed several small sums totalling £4 5/- from Griffin, who finally became suspicious, and ultimately found out the truth about his guest's visionary £30. While in Raglan, Detective McMahon explained, Buchanan, by false representation, obtained 5/from .another man. The accused admitted the truth of the detective's story, and was sent to gaoi for two months.
