Inebriate.—William Betts, a prohibited person, was up for his fourth offence within six months. For the drunkenness he was awarded three months, and for breaking prohibition was fined £2 or one month, sentences to be concurrent. Another prohibited fourth offender, William Henry Whiteside, was similarly dealt with. James Corrigan, a previous offender, was fined 10/ and costs, in default 48 hours, as was James Collins, a second offender. One absentee forfeited bail, and three first offenders were fined the usual 5/ and costs, with the alternative of 24 hours.-

Obscenity and Assault.—A seafaring man named John Anderson, for using obscene language in Cross-street, and for assautling Elizabeth Watson, was fined £1 and 10/ respectively, with costs, in default seven days on each charge, concurrently.

A Kicking Mania.—Percival Harris was charged with committing an unprovoked assault on Ernest Furlong -Collins in Grey-street last night by knocking him down and kicking him. Collins declared that he had never seen the accused before, and had done nothing to provoke him. The licensee of the Carpenters' .Arms Hotel said that he saw accused first brutally kicking a man under a lamppost, and a little later he had another man on the ground, lower down the street, and was kicking him. Harris' defence was that he was challenged to fight by the other man. The magistrate considered the assault to have been a most brutal one, and sentenced accused "to one month's imprisonment.

A Derelict. — A tottery old man named John Carter admitted having been found on the premises of Messrs. Samuel Vaile and Sons, last night, the reason being apparently that, having no place of his own in which to spend the evening, he had located himself on the premises in question. He was remanded in order that arrangements might be made for his admission to the Costley Home.
