THE COUNTIES' CONFERENCE.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) W'ELLTNGTON, Wednesday. The following remits were passed by the Counties Conference:—That when road districts merge into the county the subsidy payable to such Road Boards shal be paid into the funds of the County Councils, irrespective of £500 limit; and that Government be requested to take into consideration the question of giving County Councils power to enter the name of any defaulting ratepayer npon county electoral roll in force for the time being, with 28 days' notice, anything contained in Counties A|c_, 1886, to the contrary notwithstanding; that the time has arrived when the powers conferred upon Borough Councils under the Municipal Corporations Act, as regards all drainage, should be extended to County Councils; that where county offices are situated outside county boundaries, and the business of the county is conducted within such offices, the same should be sufficient to fulfil all requirements of the Dog Registration Act, as though the offices were situated within the county. WELLINGTON, this day. At the Counties' Conference to-day, it was resolved that the incomplete manner in which the native lands are entered in the valuation rolls renders the collection of rates by local bodies on such lands an impossibility, and nullifies the object of the Native Lands Rating Act; that provisions should be made in the Government Valuation of Land Act for compelling valuer-geneTal to insist on valuation roil of each local authority containing the name of the occupier and owner of all native land ratable within the meaning of the Native Lands Act.
