AVONDALE ROADS.
(Tβ the Eaitori Sir.—Heigh-ho! What has moved the Avondale Road Board that they repea-t----ledly and specially invited the Avondale South ratepayers to their annuail meeting? The like never happened bsfore. The chairman stated Avondale South got more than their fair share of the rates. But what is Avondale South? There are various areas so called. Let the chairman define it, and from that basis give the rates collected" and the subsidies accrued for the last 20 years, and per contra the money expended on the roads, and then we can judge what share was secured. I think it will, be shown what has been expended is not onethird of the money collected. Take, for example, a part meotioned by him as Hill-street. This is occupied since June. 1886. and in that time, roughly speaking, £70 has. been paid in rates and subsidies, while I think ,£ 15 has been expended on the street. That looks like fair—about a-fifth expended of what was ! received. The same may be said of' ether parts. These statements are made on the only basis available, and may be changed either way. I heard the chairman urged the Board to give more than a fair share of rate expenditure to a new settler, who never paid £-5 in rates. He offered £1G to assist on his road if the Board did the work, which would take only £12 additional of the ratepayers' money. This settCex has a ■wellformed road to his door, but he wants it metalled. Why does the chairman advocate this? Why? Why? Now it is proposed to strike a rate for Arch HiU deviation; bat I also propose striking a rate to meet Ridge-road and Mount Ros-kiH—-J am. etc., ' . ; , & HUtL-STKEBI EiATETPAiTEB.
