——*-— j NEWMARKET. , The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr F.. Bennett), and Crs. A. Seccombe, C- Leek, r John McColl, R. Holmes, E. Davis, an 4 James McColl. ".' . "

Fire Brigade Efficiency.—The secretary o£ the Newmarket Fire Brigade wrote to the Council asking for a. quantity of hose and other necessary equipment to placa the brigade On an efficient footing. The quarterly donation was" also requested. The Mayor suggested that the question of the quarterly allowance be deferred until it became due,- and the remainder of the request he proposed should be referred for the consideration of the Waterworks Committee, with instructions to report at next meeting. After a little discussion it was decided to pay the alolwance, and to adopt the Mayor's proposal re the equipment. Tramway Employees' Holiday.—An application from the managing director of tha Electric Tramways Co. for permission to suspend the service through the borough on Good Friday, to enable the employees to hold their annual picnic, was granted. Grey Lynn Gas Levels.—A letter was read, from the Grey Lynn town clerk, asking the financial assistance of Newmarket in an appeal against the recent decision of Judza Edwards in- the legal action between Grey T"? 11 ., a Jt d the Gas Company. The letten stated that in compliance with the Council s requirements the Gas Company had adjusted the levels, of their mains In the borough, but had billed the Council witH the cost which action the judge had upheld The expense of an appeal would, be about £110, and in their common interest as local bodies Newmarket was asked *a stand by Grey Lynn in the matter.
