ONEHUNGA.

A special meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last evening, when.there were present: The Mayor (Mr Angus W. Gordon) in the -chair Crs. S. Barr, W Morton, sen., W. Blyth, A. Hutchison, G. Moody, C. A. Osborne, J. Williams, and W. Colledge. The town, clerk r ? a ! 1 a- letter from the contractors who stated that they wished to withdraw their previous letter, and would continue the work on the folio-wing conditions, viz.: (1) ! That the contract be terminated on either c? c tie sMnsot three months' notice; (-) that the Council take over tiie float at J5i c *? a i °L ttLe contr act at the cost of £20; (3) that the Council take a more determined stand in' the mator of -recovering arrears. Th,e Mayor said the -first and second conditions were reasonable, but as tor the last, the Council had done all possible by suing for arrears. If there was a sanitary .rate the charge could be made against property. Cr..Moocly: That would be the right way. Some people have nothing to distrain. The Mayor: The contractor could refuse to call on such- people for a vtlme. and then they conld-be proceeded against under the Public Nuisances Act Cr. Blyth moved: "That Messrs Bray anaCo, s request be acceded to." He thought the Council should agree with the contractors for another year. Cr. Morton said it ■would be better to let Messrs Bray and Co complete their contract with three months' notice. As to "the coUecting of fees that could be got over in future possibly by" passing that duty orer to the inspector.' lie Mayor said, that when Stokes gave up the work no new contract was entered upon, it was simply passed on to Bray, and therefore no deposit was necessary The Council had no power to enter upon, a new. contract. In a way Stokes was still the contractor. • When tha septic tank was finished fresh tenders could then be called for. The Mayor then put the-motion' to accede to the request, and this was carried. Cr. Morton voted- against it
