THE CITY FINANCES.

IN A HEALTHY CONDITION.

The statement of the city balances at the 31st of December, 1904, was submitted to the Council at the meeting last night. The accounts at credit were as follow: General, £5588 7/8; water supply, £13,751 19/1; Costley Free Library bequest (mortgages £11,425), £12,150; Free Library, £375 17/5; contractors' deposits (deposits £1000). £2052 10/; Waikumete Cemetery, £574 15/6; charitable aid, £1439 0/2; loan, 1809, £5969 2/11; fire brigade loan, 1901. £2317: Victoria. Park loan. 1901, £4087 6/4; sinking tund re proposed loans. £2013 1/7; consolidated loan, 1579, J£ 1 11/; and suspense (re Treasury remittance), £302 8/6; total credit. £50,473 0/2. The only ones at debit were: Improvement Trust, £115 8/11; Domain Trust, £178 4/6: sanitation, £319 6/: and interest, £659 15/5; total debit. 1302 14/10. The Mayor said the balances were very satisfactory, as the Council -was at present receiving interest on £31,000." Mr J. McLeod suggested that if the financial position was so good, surely something might be done for.. Graftonroad. The Mayor said that would be provided for *n next year's estimates. Mr C. J. Parr said Ponsonby footpaths were requiring more attention than Grafton-road. Mr A. J. Entrican said they must not overlook the fact that the finances were at present very healthy, because the bulk of the rates came in towards tha end of the year. The Mayor said there was still another £8000 to come.
