PORT ARTHUR TROOPS ARRIVING. 40,000 TO JOIN OYAMA. (Received 8.20 a.m.) • LONDON, January 18. Advices which have been received from Mukden state tbat forty thousand of the troops from Port Arthur have already reinforced FieldMarshal Oyama's army at ghe Sba River. A SEVERE ENGAGEMENT. NARROW RUSSIAN ESCAPE. HEAVY JAPANESE LOSSES. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 18. General Kuropatkin reports that a strong Japanese detachment of all arms, under cover of a mist on Saturday last, eutflanhed a column of Russian cavalry that was about to retire northward. A battle ensued, in which the Russian guns, at a range of about one thousand paces, inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. The cavalry then retired in good order. Their casualties numbered five of fleers and fifty men. THE RECENT RAID. CHINESE REGULARS PARTICIPATE. Received 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, January 18. A Japanese staff officer states that a considerable number of Chinese regulars accompanied General Mistchenko's troops in their recent raid.
