EXPLOSION OF MAGAZINE

STRANGE RUSSIAN EXPLANATION.

(Received 8.30 a.m.)

LONDON, January 18. Russian sources are responsible for the story that the gases from the Japanese mine which exploded during the attack on the Songshushan fort collected in an underground passage, and fired the magazine, causing the entombment of Russian troops immediately prior to the fall of the fortress. [The incident referred to is the explosion of a mine which destroyed the parapet of the fort, burying 300 Russians, of whom the Japanese dug out two officers and 200 men.]
