SUGAR-WORKERS' PICNIC.
The annual picnic of the employees of the Colonial Sugar Company took place on Saturday. The picnickers, numbering over 700, embarked on the p.s. Albatross, for Motutapu. at 9.3 U. Upon fiieir arrival ut the Island the following programme of sports was gone through: IOOYds Handicap (open to employees over IS years).—Fleet hea.t: T. Franc-is, scratch, 1; 11. England, 2; ('. I-angdon, a. Second lu>at: B. Williams, 1; C. Kclsall, 2 Three jstartod. Third heat: Murray U-oochill, 1; J. Easdale, -; J. Francis, 3. Junior 100 yds Handicap (odou to employees and employees' sous under 18 years). — J. Peterson, 1; N. Taylor, 2; C. Hawked, S. Senior lOUyds Handicap (open to employees over 40 years of age).—T. Hohmvood. 1: F. Goldsmith, sen., 2. lOOi'ds Handicap (open to employees over 18 years). —Final heat: T. Francis, scratch, 1; M. Uoodall. 2; H. England. 3. 440 Yds Handicap (open to all employees). ■— T. Griffiths, 1; 11. England, 2; T. Francis, 3. Seven started. IOOYds 'Pickki-back Race.—W. Cundall and C. Kelsall, 1; W. Henderson and F. Kelsall. 2. There were 15 entries for the employees' daughters' race. The winner was Laura Mcßhatt. The 100 yds boot race created inncli amusement. The winner was F. Kelsall. Tng-of-\var, Company's Emptoyeee v. Contractors. — The employees' representatives consisted of S. Oaujpbell, H. Mann, G. GoodaJi, G. DeaTi, I!. Pike, W. Parish, |W. Franker, It. McDowell, L. Stanley, E. iOoleinan and J. Wrightson (skipper)." The contractors' representatives were: J. Hall, J. Smith. S. Poole. F. Poole, B. Poole, J. Kelly, C. Langdon, A. Brett, A. Page, T. Hoimwood, and J Leonard (skipper). Tie first tug was in favour of the company's [men, but the second and third went with the contractors'. The latter, therefore, scored a victory. As the Albatross left the island come •amusement was caused by the discovery that several be-latfd trippers were left behind—an enforced holiday, as the guests of several yachtsmen awaits them.
