The Grey Lynn Borough Ouacll met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Farrell), Councillors A. Donald, J. Currie, A. Creamer, C. McMasters, G. Balldou, S. Thomas, W. W. Dumper, and W. S. Smith. Applications re footpaths in King-street, from A. J. Warnoek; Surrey-crescent, from V. Casey; Hose-road, from A. C. Foster, were referred to the Streets Committee. A letter was read from the Board solicitors re right to charge rates on property in Saetville-street in whicn a Roman Catholic school is bold: The solicitors stated that if the school is not carried on exclusively for pecuniary gain or private profit die school property was exempt from rates. The solicitors also pointed out that it is quite clear this section of land does uot come under the - exemption clauses dealing with churches. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee to make further inquiries. In order to widen the filling-in at the gully, Rose-road, It was decided to ask pennissiou from the Assets Board to cut two allotments down to the road level in order to get the earth. ihe District Health Officer wrote drawing attention to a defective drain in Roseroad, which he considered a disgraceful example of bad drain-laying. In the vicinity enteric (two cases fatal) and diphtheria had oceurri-d. The town clerk reported that the drain had been re-laid. The old drain had no cement at the joints, the sew ■ age thus being able to flow anywhere. The engineer submitted phins for cho drainage of Peol-street. Mr Donald moved, and Mr Creamer seconded, that the work be proceeded with, poet to be taken trom allocation for formation. On the motion of Mr Thomas, it was deeMed to connect the Richmond fire station by telephone. Mr Baildon moved that the Tramway Co. be asked to place some combination cars on the Arch Hill Hue. This was agreed to. NEWMARKET. The Newmarket Borough Council held its ordinary meeting last night. The Mayor (.Mr F. Bennett) presided, and there were also present: Mess-s Holmes, McCoH, Ijeek, Kinder, and Edgerley. Tramways Picnic—At the request of th? Auckland Tramways Co. it was unanimously decided to allow of the total suspension of the service through the borough on Good Friday, so that the employees' annual picnic mij;ht be held. Water Supply.—The ratopayers of Hunt-ly-avenuc petitioned for an adequate water service, pointing out that one small pipe had to supply all the houses. The Waterworks Committee was instructed to report. At the request of the Railway Department it was decided to supply the linemau's and signal adjuster's worksnop at New-market with water by meter. Shed. —A committee consisting of the Mayor, Messrs Edgerley. Holmes, and McColl was appointed, with power to act in the mutter of providing it new shed for the Council's machines, the foreman of works reporting this to be necessary. Police —On the motion of Mr H. Kinder it wns dt-cided to apply to the Minister for Justice i'or an additional policeman for Newmarket. Mr Kinder considered that the two policemen stationed in the district was not enough. Watering the Streets. —It was decided to ask the Tramways Company to contribute hulf the cost of watering the streets of the borough. FiBWELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last night In the Council Chambers. Mr J. Fitt (Mayor of Parnell) presiding. Those also present were Messrs Petford. Basley. Bealc, Fowler, Foster. Slator. Thomas, and Briggs. Tramway Employees' Holiday.—A communlcatloii was received from the Auckland Electric Tramway Company asking the Council's permission for a cessation of the service on Good Friday, in order to allow the employees of the company to have their holiday and picnic.—The request was acceded to. Sanitary Matters.—Dr. Frengley, district health officer, wrote with reference to sacitnry matters in certain parts of the borough which he had Inspected, and suggesting alterations In the by-laws and the way the work was being curried out. The matter was referred to a committee of the Council to consider and report upon. Finance. — Accounts totalling £151 14/2 were passed for payment. Property Valuer.—lt was decided to appoint Mr Hssher valuer of the borough proport ios for the year. Extension of Tramway.—Mr BeaJe spoke of the position in which the residents of Gladstone road wore placed owing to the I>ur service being riisoortinned at the commencement of the tram service In the borough and the Tramway Company having failed to replace the 'buses with an extended tram service.—lt was resolved to urge on the Tramway Company the necessity for proceeding with the extension.
