WELLINGTON NOTES.

s ■ (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent WELLINGTON, Sunday. THE PROGRESS OF THE MAIN TRUNK LINE. The "Post" is the authority for stating that the pace, at which the northern and southern ends of the North Island Main Trunk railway are being constructed doe~ not meet with the approval of Mr. Remington, the member for Rangitikei. From a recent inspection of the work he judges that the valuable Waimarino forest will be tapped fro the Auckland end in three and ahalf years, but to open it up from the southern end will take quite six years. This, he points out, means that Auckland will get such a firm hold of the trade with the Waimarino (which should be enormcis) that Wellington will not be able to get anything like its fair share when the forest is opened up from this end. Mr. Remington marvels at the apathy of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in the matter. STATE FIRE INSURANCE. At its meeting last night the Petone Borough Council transferred one of its fire insurance policies to the State Fire Department, and as the matter was urgent, the late policy having expired, the premium was paid at once to the loral agent of the Department, who happened to be present in another capacity. NELSON GARDENS. An inspection of gardens in the Nelson district under the provisions of the Orchard and Garden Pests Act is at present being made by Messrs. Cockayne, of the Agricultural Department, and Blackmore, Government Pomologist. It is not intended to take harsh measures against growers during the first year of the operation of the Act.
