ASHORE IN FRENCH PASS.
WAINUI ON A ROCK. SUCCESSFULLY REFLOATED. (By Telezrapn.—Press Association.) NELSON, Sunday. The Wainui, from Wellington, had a narrow escape this morning. She encountered a dense fog near the French Pass, and it was decided to round dTJrville Island. At seven o'clock the passengers weia startled by the ship striking, and rushed to the deck. The passengers, mails, and some of the crew were sent away in boats. The sea was smooth, but the ship had run upon a rock, and was considerably down by the stern. Fears were entertained that she might slip off and sink. It was low water at eight, and at nine she came off. The place where she struck was between Stevens and d'Urville Islands. No passengers were hurt, and after reembarkation the steamer came on to Nelson. She was detained for further examination, and an inquiry will be held to-morrow. The officers declined to gtv* information, which was obtaineo irom passengers. They speak highly of the conduct of Captain Hull and his officers.
