PORT ARTHUR.
A TREMENDOUS BOMBARDMENT. REPORTED JAPANESE REPULSE TWO THOUSAND RUSSIAN WOUNDED. PUBLIC BUILDINGS USED AS HOSPITALS. (Received 9.3 a.m.) LONDON, August 21.
The bombardment of Port Arthur, which is feeing consistently maintained, attained on the 20th inst. to tremendous proportions. Shells were fired in great number into the town both from the land batteries and the warships. Reports, which have not yet been confirmed, have been received at Chifu, to tbe effect that tbe Japanese ha—c suffered a repulse. Captain Hogmann, the German naval attache at Part Arthur, has arrived at the German treaty pert of _Ciao-ch.au. A Japanese cruiser picked him up from a Chinese junk thirty miles from Port Artinr. Refugees arriving at Chinese ports state that there are over two thousand Russians lying wounded at Port Arthur. Such is the demand for space for the sufferers that many of the public buildings in the town are being converted into hospitals. JAPS LOSE A POSITION. HEAVY CASTJAI/rXES ON BOTH SIDES. LONDON, August 20. Chinese refugees from Port Arthur report that the Japanese have been expelled from Pa-li-chwang, a place two miles to the north of tbe fortress, whence they were bombarding the inner forts. They also say that the Russians, after taking Pa-li-chwang, pushed on and drove tbe Japanese back to Sbwisfaiying. Other aeeo—xts say that there is continual fighting at all points, in which both sides have lost heavily.
