The bombardment of Port Arthur has now, it is stated, become tremendous, and the Russian public buildings are being employed as auxiliary hospitals. An engagement two miles from the town is said to have entailed n Japanese repulse, bnt this is as yet unconfirmed. Two more cruisers may l>c considered hors de combat, the Novik bein«, r ashore ou Saghalien. and the Diana at the French port of Saigon, in Cochin China. With regard to the main armies the Russians are retreating towards Mukden, which is considered to be the Japauese objective.
