The House of Representatives has carried the Eastern districts of New South Wales as the site for the capital against the Western districts by 39 votes to 28. Then, on the voices, the capital site was fixed at a spot 17 miles from Dalgety, a small village on the Snowy River. * [Dalgety was formerly known as Buckley's Crossing Place, and is a small township situated- 296 miles to the south of Sydney. At present the place, which has a population of only 300, is somewhat remote, being served only by a tri-weekly coach from the station at Cooma, which is 32 miles distant. Dalgety has a courthouse, police barracks, two hotels, two stores, an Anglican and a Roman Catholic Chur_h, and a State school. Numerous lakes are within easy reach of the town, and the wild fowl attracts sportsmen.
