AUCKLAND BOOKMAKER FINED.
At to-day's Police Court, before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., an Auckland bookmaker named Alfred Edward Humphries was charged with making a bet at Ellerslie on April 13th with a person whom lie knew to be an infant, and also with making a bet, the result of which to tha layer depended upon the totalizator.
Chief Detective Grace, who prosecuted, said that it was Humphries' first offence, as he iiad only recently started betting.
Accused pleaded guilty •to both charges, and His Worship asked Detective Grace if he would be satisfied with a conviction upon one charge, the maximum penalty being £20.
Detective Grace replied in the affirmative, adding that the accused had a family, and was not too well off.
A line of £5 with costs was imposed, the second charge being withdrawn.
