GOLF
There was a record muster of golfers at the Cornwall Park lins on Saturday. _\io less than sti players turned up during the afternoon in spite of the inclemency if the weather. The Governor with a p; ; rty of friends played a round during the afternoon. The first series of matches fcr the club championship has been played off, and provided some very close and well-contested games. In his match with W. Peel, R. A. Carr had a close game, but eventually won at the 17th bole with two up and one to play. H. Gillies defeated G. M. Burness by four Lip and three to play. The match which ?ttracted most interest was that between W B. Colbeck and A. B. Lawrence. Both players were very evenly matched. though thp latter was rather the steadier and he succeeded in winning the Sth hole in four to five, with Colbeck three up The 9th hole was badly halved in glx but a perfect half resulted at Jacob's i idfler' The next hole was very interesting and at the 12th Colbeck was still one up but his oononent equalised matte-s bv'four t" five at the amnhitheatre. At the 14th Colbeck holed a four, but Lawrence at the 15th secured a five and again made all square. Both were even at the 16th, and at the 17th Lawrence for the first time in the m#cb was one up. WKb cnlv a half tn win? and with his opponent within 7yds, Lawrence somehow miswi- bl« nut and tbe match became again a^ square A nineteenth hole had thus to be played, but Colbeck found the plantation and thus lost a very close match whrt-was as eood as any ever played in I_.kland M?C *. S- Gillies defeated .LR Svkes at the 17th hole with two up and one to play. _. Next round H Gillies meets B D. O'Rorke. and rh* winner meets A^B. t nwrpncp C Glllips meets R A. carr.
