EMPIRE VETERANS' ASSOCIATION.

A concert was given in the Foresters' flail, Newton, last evening by the Empire Veterans' Association, under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly. The Governor was accompanied by Captain Alexander, private secretary, and Captain Boscawen, Hon. A.D.C. The veterans assembled in good numbers, and there was a large audience of the general public. The programme contained a number of very pleasing items, and was heartily appreciated by the audience. The initial item was a selection by Meredith's string band, who also contributed an overture later on in the evening. The song, "The King's Own," was sung with such expression by Miss Maud Howard that she was compelled to respond lO an encore. Miss Millie Peak played adroiiably a violin solo entitled "Saltarella" < Vieuxtemps). Mr Fred .Lloyd sang two humorous songs, "I Want to Go To-morrow" and "Eight Bars' Rest," fop both of which he was rewarded with encores. Veteran ColourSergeant Instructor Over gave a good exhibition of kettledrum beating, and was loudly applauded. Mr T. W. Brown gave a clever display of Indian club swinging. Songs were sung by Mr A. Ford, "Star of Bethlehem" (Adams); Mr W. Manning, "The Gallants of England" (encored). Mr St. John played as a cornet solo Sullivan's "Lost Chord;" and Mr F. Carter was encored for some very choice selections on the harp. Mr R. Keenan recited "Kissing Cup's Race," and the programme terminated with the National Anthem. During the interval His Excellency chatted with a number of the old veterans. At the .conclusion of the concert the veterans were entertained at supper. The arrangements of-the entertainment were in the hands of a subcommittee consisting of Major Morrow and Messrs Brock, King, Over, and Oulpan the secretary; and the success of the concert reflects credit upon their efforts. The hall was gaily decorated with bunting lent by Messrs Ross and Ansenne, and the furniture for the use of the Governor and party was kindly supplied by Mr Catchpole, Newton.
