WAIHI, this day. Great interest is being taken here in th_ mayoral elections to-day. Mr C. J. Saunders, one of the candidates, had an enthusiastic meeting on Friday evening in. the Miners' Union Hall; Mr Donaldson in the chair. Mr W. Phillips, another candidate, addressed a public meeting in ■the Academy of Music on Saturday night. The District Electors' list just published, contains 1759 names. The candidates for Mayor- are Messrs P. H. Lees, C. J. Saunders, and W.-H. Phillips. There are 27 nominated for the Council election on Wednesday next. The polling booth is the Miners' Union Hall. The candidates for the Mayoral honourhave signed an agreement that they will accept the result of the poll to-day as final and agree to assist the successful candidate at the future election in a month if required. f , ' "■»' ' A chopping match of considerable interest, for £25 a side, took, place in the Wai-: hi Hall on Saturday night between James Hines, of Waitekauri, and J. Pretty, of Waihi. .Constable Payne acted as referee. Hines won comfortably. Pretty challenged him for another match at a future date. The time, imin 10 2-ssec. is consid- ■ ered very quick. A local handicap, six competing, was won by Taylor. The shooting men in the Waihi mina have challenged an outside team of residents to fire a match on Saturday next at the rifle range. Three weddings have taken place here within the last two days, the contracting" parties being Mr J. Pascoe and Miss Mabel Young, Mr J. H. Rose and Miss Snow,; only daughter of Mr Snow, manager of:; the Waihi South mine; and Mr J. McCarthy and Miss, Rickard. At a recent meeting of the Katikati. Junior Football Club the following officers were elected:—President, Mr N. J. Stewart; vice-presidents, Messrs N. A. Johnson, Wigley, Blakenly, and Buckworth; captain, W. Gilbert; vice-captain, T. 'Rea '• selection committee, Messrs Macmillan, A. Johnson, M. A. Stewart; Wigley, Fletcher, and Gledstanes; treasurer,Mr J. Gray; chairman and secretary, A. W. Fisher. Mr F. Seelye, the recently appointed assistant lecturer to Mr P. G. Morgan at the Waihi School of Mines, has arrived in Waihi from Dunedin. Messrs Whyte, _angford, and Weir,students at the above school, obtained first class mine managers' certificates at the recent examinations. Mr B. Bennie also obtained a first class coal miner's certificate. The Rev. Gover, the newly appointedvicar of St. John's Anglican Church, Waihi, has arrived and* will preach hia Inaugural sermon next Sunday. At the annual meeting- of the Waihi Rugby Union, held in Meyers' Clubroom, the following officials were elect- ' cd:—Patron, Mr E. H. PiUing; vice-pat-ron. Father Brodie; president, Mr D. McLean; vice-presidents, Messr W. _L Phillips, G. Johnston, CI Millijs, H. E. Meyer, i: M. Power, and J. Fleti: chairman, J. Hind; secretary, R. Arscott; treasurer, Mr Flett.
