RAILWAY SERVANTS' SOCIETY.
MEETING AT PALMERBTOX
fßy Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON NORTH, this day
A special general meeting of the local branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was held yesterday to consider replies from the general manager to requests made by the conference in April last year. The opinion was expressed that replies on the following questions were inadequate and unsatisfactory: — (1) Classification; (2) failure of the department-to recognise a stated week's work for certain traffic hands; (3) demand made that bridge hands be paid for on wet and dry, days; (4) failure of the department to grant eight hours oft" between shifts. Regarding the latter clause, men consider that where the exigencies of the service are opposed, time equivalent to three hours shall be allowed. The meeting was the largest attended for years. Another meeting will be held to decide upon a course of action.
