Those drowned in the wreck included Mr Wild man, American Con-sul-General at Hong: Kong, and his family; Mr C, Dowdall, :i well known barrister; Mr H. C. Mnthesou, engineer employed by the Chinese Government; Mr Alfred Hart, diamond expert from Manila, and his wife. Mr William Rrander, a member of the London Stock Exchange, was saved by n life preserver, utr^cli:^ }i;q} &\v%s sittnooots -jsaju^ . Ward remained on the bridge until the ship foundered.
[The steamer City of Rio de Janeiro belonged to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and traded between San Francisco and China. She was an iron vessel of 3540 tons register, and was built at Chester. Pennslyvania, in 1878.]
