THE ABSORPTION OF KARANGAHAPE WARD.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—ln your issue of the 20th inst. I notice a letter on the above signed G. Knight. The writer says: "Through recent excitement we are apt to lose' sight of local matters." Possibly so, but allow me to inform the writer that when the idea of altering the name of the Karangahape ■ Ward was first mooted in Council, Councillor J. Patterson (Karangahape Ward), who .is at present at Dunedin, decided to call a public meeting of the ratepayers to hear their views on the question and determine what steps should be taken, and for that purpose both Councillors Jamieson and Salmon wore interviewed and asked to unite with Mr Patterson in calling the meeting. However, neither considered this step advisable at that time, and Mr Patterson, not wishing to be solus in the matter, allowed it to stand over, and now tho cry comes, "Too late!" I reply to Mr Knight's letter trusting that the explanation I have given will be sufficient for the electors of the Ward to see that in no way was Mr Patterson to be blamed for the meeting not being called at the proper time. —I am, etc., R. B. MASON, Hon. Sec. Mr Patterson's Committee.
