EXCESSIVE HOUSE RENTS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Can you, or any of your readers, inform me what .rate of interest do the Auckland property-holders g-et In the shape of rents? Recently a great decline in the bank rate of interest came about, but there was. no reduction in the:'" house rents. If loan offices and banks reduced the.rate of interest,, why do not propertyholders do likewise with their tenants? Is it not time for. the poor, who find it hard to meet excessive rents, to wake up and get some of our honourable members to draft a "Fair Rent Bill," allowing 5 per cent, interest on the capital value ,of property to be withdrawn in rent? Up to the present there is no legislation, and landlords may g;et any rent they demand.—l am, etc., , AD VALOREM.
