The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists, held today, was well attended, Mr J. L. Kelly, vice-president, in the chair. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, W. H. Trigg, Christchurch; vice-presidents; J. L. Kelly (Wellington), VV. IV C. Carncross, M.H.11. (Dunedin), and F. Baxter (Auckland); secretary, Mr <5. 11. Allen (Christchurch); treasurer, W. 11. .Triggs; auditor; P. J. Nolan (Christchurch). The question of registering the institute under the Conciliation and"Arbitration Act was discussed at great length. It .was resolved unanimously, "That each branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists form a Board of Conciliation to hear and determine all matters relating to conditions of work, rates. of salary; and other .similar questions;" -which may from time to time arise, affecting journalists, such. Board to consist of three members, a chairman, who may be chosen from an 3' of the learned professions, to be elected by vote of both employers arid working journalists, one member to be elected by employers and one member, to be a member of the institute, but not an employer,, to be elected by working journalists; that this question be, referred to the different branches for decision by ballot of their members." Some amendments were made in the by-laws. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr G. Saunders, the retiring president, and Mr C. W. Earle, the retiring secretary, complimentary references being made to the latter official for the great, services he had rendered the institute during his four years' term of office.
