TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS.

The charges of cattle stealing preferred against Whio Tanera and Tcra Putiki, which were part heard yesterday, were continued to-day. Mr 0. J. Parr, who represented the prisoners, stated that the defence was that the cow which the. natives killed was believed at the time to be a native cow. He called four witnesses to support this defence. Counsel addressed Hie jury, and after His Honor "had summed up the jury retired for three-quarters of an hour. Ultimately a verdict of not guilty was found and prisoners were discharged. ALLEGED INDECENT ASSAULT. Albert Ernest: Masters, a young man, was chnrgedwit-h that he did, on May 4, at the Thames, indecently assault one Bertha Reidman, a girl under the age of 16 years. The Hem. J. A. Tole, Crown Solicitor, conducted the prosecution, and Mr F. E. Bamne appeared' for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Mr Tole stated that the accused was a shoemaker at the Thames. The child whom he was accused of assaulting was not more than 9 years of age. The child had been sent, to the accused's place for some shoes, which were being mended, and it was alleged that while there the accused had taken her into a back room and there assaulted her. —Evidence for the prosecution was then taken.
